Snow!

Some of you may have heard on the news, Alaska is getting slammed with snow.  We are getting storms from just about every direction.  Cordova was burried under about 15 to 20 feet of snow (don't worry, Cordova is in the southeast, I'm in southcentral).  We have about 3 feet on the ground and another 18 inches expected overnight and through tomorrow.  The Seward Highway is closed just south of Anchorage to Girdwood due to avalanches.  The Whittier Tunnel is closed due to avalanches.  In short, we have a LOT of snow up here.  It seems like the lower 48 sent all the snow they are supposed to be getting up here instead.  Most of you have had little to no snow I hear?  I'm having a good old time because I love snow.  The downside is when the winds get strong and drift it across the driveway, which tends to make shoveling a bit difficult.

Uncle Larry and Aunt Holly, do you have much snow?

I can't believe it's already 2012.  I had a little laugh at Mike when he wrote 2011 on the meat packages we were putting in the freezer.  It happens to me, too.  Have to get used to the new date.  There is an indoor sports arena in the area that has a turf field.  Every day from 10 to 1 they set up toys and you can bring your young kids and let them run around and play with other young kids.  It's great!  I am taking Nathan for the second time tomorrow with one of my friends who also has a daughter his age.  It gets us out of the house and it allows him to run off some energy, which translates into an easier day for mom.  I think I will try to take him twice a week so he can socialize and run around.

  2. Wow! 20feet of snow is hard for me to imagine. That's great that you can take Nathan to that indoor arena. Have you gotten to see the northern lights up there in Alaska? You might have already said something on here, but I don't recall.

  3. We get a dusting of snow on most nights lately. Because it is so cold (-25) it's not melting so it is gradually adding up to about an inch or two! We could use more snow, it's been very dry. Be glad you don't have to take the kids to school every day!

    1. Holly,

Negative 25 is pretty cold. How do you heat your house? Is it super insulated? My house is so leaky that I do not even think that I could stay warm at that extreme temperature.

    2. Our house is heated with gas. It holds the heat very well considering the age of the house. Calvin thinks it's because it has a stucco exterior and I suppose that does cut down on cracks where cold can get in. The porch is not insulated and it gets pretty cold out here (where my computer is). It was up to 52 on Sunday but today feels a bit cooler.

  4. We got around 5 inches of snow Friday night and I spent Saturday shoveling out. Then the weather warmed up again and it all melted. On Wednesday (yesterday) it went up to 56 degrees, then thunderstorms came through in the evening and it went down to the low 20s within a matter of hours. We had a dusting of snow this morning and it is cold. They are calling for lake effect snow for the next couple days, they it is supposed to go up into the mid 40s again over the weekend. CRAZY!!!
